【Career Advice】Learn about your personality type can elevate your career

Overview of personality tests

No matter if it’s a character quiz on a magazine or a food quiz on Buzzfeed, most of the personality quizzes are just for fun.  However, some reveal truth and wisdom that help shed light on different aspects of personality, behaviors and decisions. They also can be an insightful exercise in getting to know yourself.

For instance, The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) is one of the most popular personality assessments in the world. Originally designed to assess psychological preferences, the MBTI demonstrates how people interact with the world and make decisions. These insights are helpful, especially for career counselors, psychologists and employers, to learn more about what people are good at and what their strengths and weaknesses are.

Reason 1: It answers the question of WHY

By learning more about yourself and your personality type, you will be able to understand your preference and the reasons behind why you act or behave the way you are. For example, taking phone calls at work brings you anxiety and stress and you can’t pinpoint the reasons why, and that hinders how you perform at work. By understanding some of your personality traits, you might be able to understand why you prefer certain tasks over others. This comes in handy when you are making important decisions that might have an impact on your career path. Picking the right career that aligns with your personality traits and preferences also means that you will end up being happier with your choice, and avoid making the wrong decision.

Understanding more about your personality type and traits can also help with understanding more about other people. It’s important to acknowledge that there is no “better” personality type — we’re all different. Because we have different personality traits, everyone thinks differently and might not value the same things you value. With that being said, getting to know more about your personality type answers the questions of why people behave the way they do, and it would be easier to interact and communicate with others.

Reason 2: It helps you figure out HOW

Apart from getting to know why you react certain ways, learning about your personality type also helps with recognizing how we lead, influence, communicate, collaborate business and manage stress. Knowing what might work best for yourself and your personality type also helps with coping with conflicts and managing work habits.

Knowing your personality type can help you answer questions like “how do I find a career I’m passionate about” and “how do I communicate with my colleagues”. You can discover new ways to approach and handle problems, and make better decisions. Insights from your personality traits are actionable and applicable to your everyday life, especially in the workplace.

Reason 3: It helps you embrace your own strengths and weaknesses

As you go deeper into your personality traits, you learn more about what you are good at and what you are not. It is important to know your strengths so you can play to them and use them to your advantage. For example, you’re an extrovert that energizes every conversation at work. Take this as a reference for elevating your career by jumping into chances that can showcase your public speaking and communication skills.

Knowing your weaknesses with personality type can also help you see how your weaknesses interfere with your life and help you find ways to minimize their impact on your life. If you acknowledge common behaviors that are associated with stressful, anxious situations, you can recognize how you feel and try other behaviors instead of letting yourself run on autopilot like you used to. This way, you are more aware of what needs to be improved, especially in a workplace setting where you have to handle deadlines, stressful situations and conflicts.

Personality tests have limitations too

While personality tests like the MBTI categorize people into 16 personality types, they might not reveal everything about you. It might get a better idea of your personality, preferences and behaviors, but it is not the ultimate bible that answers all of your questions. Our lives are not static and our personalities might change as we experience more in life. Taking personality tests as a reference to get to know yourself better is a great way to grow, change and improve.
